CORE SKILLS: Planes & Planing

'Creating a flat and shimmering board with a hand-plane can be a joy' David Savage

The hand plane is the quintessential woodwork tool. Nothing comes close to the precision that these fantastic tools are capable of achieving. It is the tool that separates the weekend woodworker from the skilled amateur.

We will show you how to set up and maintain your planes, and teach you how to flatten, joint and smooth a rough-sawn board.

For your set project, you'll make a cheese board.  We used to call it a chopping board but no one wants to chop on something they've spent three days making.

It's simple in concept but it will develop and test your planing skills because you'll have to work all the surfaces by hand, make the boards fit together precisely and produce a beautifully smooth surface free from tear-out and scratches. All done without the use of sandpaper.

If you're struggling to make your plane behave properly, bring it in and we will see if we can get it working again.
