Small boxes and the like are interesting to make and are great gifts if you're in the mood to be generous. They are also perfect as a first project on which to try out your dovetailing skills.

The skills gained on this course will set you up for tackling larger projects such as a cabinet or chest of drawers as they share many of the techniques and joints involved.

You'll be taught how to:

  •  mark and cut dovetails
  •  make grooves for the base and shape the lid
  •  plane, scrape and sand the surfaces
  •  assemble the box and glue it up 'square' so that it remains the correct shape
  • apply a finish to protect the surface and enhance the grain
